Robot competition: watermelon robot gets seniors dancing

Three young inventors from the Provincial Technical School in Maasmechelen built a robot that quite literally gets seniors dancing. Lights on, music playing, dancing LEGO figures… and off they go — the conga line begins! How cool is that?! We’re proud that Comon got to help celebrate these three talents during the final of the social robot competition by Dwengo vzw. Take a peek at the photos!
‘Social Robot’ competition
Team Watermelon – yes, that’s what they call themselves – built this feel-good robot almost entirely from recycled materials. They did so as part of the Social Robot Competition by Dwengo, which had over 170 school teams participating.
Students build a robot to make society better
The challenge? Build a robot that tackles a societal issue. From loneliness among the elderly to smartphone use behind the wheel — these young minds went all-in with electronics, mechanics, laser cutting, and 3D printing.
So many young people, from all corners of the country, bursting with enthusiasm to use technology for a better world — it’s energising. Some of them took on the challenge from the previous Comon project: “How can we make moving through the city more enjoyable?” Their solution didn’t just promote movement — it brought together connection, joy, and technology in a surprising way.
Frosty or Dopey? Discover the inventions!
From a robotic dog that encourages you to move to a walking chair for those who tire easily — students built some of the most heartwarming social robots. Here’s a small selection of their creations:
- There’s Daggoe, a robotic dog with LED eyes and a personality of its own, who not only answers your questions but also happily dances along with you.
- Blijheid senses when someone walks by and gives a genuine boost with a beating heart and a big thumbs-up.
- Or how about Frosty, who keeps older adults company and reminds them to take their medication?
- Dopey shows off silly dance moves that you’re meant to copy — perfect for anyone who could use a little extra movement.
- And then there’s Brave Stoel, a chair that follows older adults wherever they go, so a place to sit is always within reach.
